California NRI launches projects to
treat poor patients

Nawanshahr: A
California-based NRI, Lajpat Rai, has unleashed a major
philanthropic effort in health care with simultaneous projects in
Jalandhar, Nawanshahr,
Amritsar and
Ludhiana. In Nawanshahr, he donated Rs 6 lakh for the treatment of
poor patients in the Civil Hospital here. The district
administration was authorised to use the funds. Rai, a native of
Nangal Shaheedan village in Hoshiarpur district, said after the
success of the project in Hoshiarpur, he plans to start it in some
other districts also. He deposited similar amount in the banks in
Jalandhar,
Ludhiana
and Amritsar districts.
The projects
would be initially for one year on experimental basis and would be
made permanent after its success.
"Then amount
capable of accruing interest worth Rs 6 lakh a year would be
deposited in the banks in these districts so that no poor patient
dies for the want of treatment," he maintained.
A committee
comprising a doctor, a senior nurse, the SMO and the DC would look
into each case and recommend for imbursement of expenses from the
amount.
The
philanthropist, who has been awarded a doctorate degree by the
California
State
University,
Frezno, for his noble works is already said to have donated Rs
30-crore for Swami Sarvaanand Giri Institute of Information
Technology, in Hoshiarpur district.
