Sikhs
form inquiry panel on 1984 genocide
WSN Network
Amritsar: Several Sikh organizations have formed a panel for probe
into the 1984 genocide, given the Central Government and CBI delay
on the inquiry. The panel would be called the 1984-Sikh Genocide
Commission.
Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti and the Shiromani
Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have given their stamp of
approval by recognising the commission and going to the extent of
urging community support.
Supreme Court Advocate H.S. Phoolka, Navkiran Singh, R.S. Bains,
Rajan Lakhanpal (all senior lawyers), All Indian Sikh Student
Federation president Karnail Singh Peermohammad, Avtar Singh Pannu,
Rajvinder Singh Brar, Charanjit Singh Harnampuria and Baba Singh
Dukhia, a representative of 1984 victims' association, would be
among the nine members nominated on the panel.
In
a memorandum to the Akal Takht Jathedar, Sikh leaders have listed
its agenda thus: inquiring the 1984 ‘genocide', drafting a list of
gurdwaras burnt down in the November of 1984, victims, witnesses and
accused.
Peermohammad said: "We have no hope of justice from the government
and CBI. Despite ten commissions of inquiry, no one has been brought
to justice and punished".
He
said that the SGPC would provide infrastructure support with an
office at Amritsar, while the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management
Committee would provide them office space in the Capital.
The
commission will hear out every victim and prepare a list of
witnesses to prosecute the guilty, Peermohammad added.
Also, Sikh bodies under the banner of Sikhs for Justice will file a
complaint with the Supreme Court and pray to the Chief Justice to
take a suo motu action and order the law enforcement authorities to
indict Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar, Kamal Nath, Bhajan Lal and
Arjun Singh, besides seeking international judicial intervention.
