San Jose Punjabis to raise funds
for new Punjabi institute
WSN Bureau
SAN JOSE:
To garner
funds for the Guru Nanak Heritage Institute for Punjabi Studies, the
State university would be hosting a formal gala fund raiser on
Friday, where more than 400 guests are likely to attend.
The
institute, has a vision to become a study centre for nonresident
Punjabis and a hub of Punjabi research, next to the
Silicon valley.
Fulfilling the
need of the Diaspora Sikh Children seems to be the main theme of the
institute as artcuiculated by Sharan Kaur and her colleagues, who
say that it is important for them to learn to read and write Punjabi
and know more about Punjabi culture and present day
Punjab
society. San
Jose is home to many Sikh migrants and has many large Gurdwaras for
its population.
"The priority of
the university is to internationalize the campus," Toepfer Karl
Toepfer,
San Jose
State's
dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts said.
Mahinder Madan,
who is a former United Nations officer and chairperson of the fund
raising mission proposes to set up a Web page to serve as a
clearinghouse all Punjabi related material.
The Diaspora
Sikh population looks forward to the day when they would be able to
reconnect to Punjab through the institute on American soil itself.
Whether that is good or not, time will tell.
