Peterborough team to try Sikh glory
in summer tournament
WSN Network
Peterborough:
Budding footballers across the city are limbering up for a
seven-a-side tournament in the summer.
The Sangot Cup
2008, which will kick off in July, will give young Sikhs across the
city the opportunity to get together for a friendly game of
football.
It also aims to
promote health and fitness among young people.
The tournament
in the city, organised by Peterborough Bharat Sikh Association, will
feature 16 teams from across the UK, including one from
Peterborough, whose players would not normally play football.
The event, which
takes place on July 27, was launched earlier this month at The Sikh
Temple in
Royce Road,
where sponsors including Singh Skips, Ice Direct, Accountancy
Solutions and Paragon Solicitors, went along to show their support.
One of the
sponsors, Raj Singh of Singh Skips said: "The Sangat Cup provides an
excellent opportunity for further community integration, utilising
one of the most popular and successful sporting mediums in the UK –
football.
"We anticipate a
tremendous event that will renew annually."
Former Posh
footballer John Cozens, who was a guest at the launch, added: "It's
nice to see a community make such an effort to get the youngsters
involved in a sport and family life by arranging a tournament of
national involvement in Peterborough."
