Harjit Gill is most popular Mayor in county

GLOUCESTER: The Mayor of this county, Jalandhar born, Harjit Gill has turned the tables on the blue blooded royalty and many other celebrities to be voted as the most popular person in the  county in an online poll. 

Gill is the first Asian Mayor of the white majority county to be voted as winner by a local magazine from more than 200 personalities who were shortlisted and for whom people voted over the last one month. 

The list included "Titanic" actress Kate Winslet and model and actress Liz Hurley, both residents of the upscale Cotswolds area of the county. 

54 year old Gill rose to the top position during the middle of the poll, leaving behind Mount Everest climbers and former cricketer Jack Russel. 

Though royalty is still worshipped in the United Kingdom, Prince Charles, who had topped the charts last year, finished sixth this year. 

It should amaze readers to know that Gill is the first Asian mayor for the country in more than 700 years and he was so humbled by the victory that he attributed the distinction to hardwork and sincerity of purpose.
