Sikhs haven’t graduated to
self-representation
WSN Network
ISLAMABAD:
In rather
curious yet understandable reports from
Pakistan,
sections of the media have underlined how the Sikhs in
Karachi
are finding it difficult to find a graduate candidate to represent
themselves at a time when the world is tearing itself apart on the
issue of self-representation. Ramesh Singh, the chairman of the Sikh
Naujawan Sabha of Pakistan hails from Sindh province but cannot
contest elections since he is not a graduate, a qualification under
the law.
There are only
about four or five Sikhs in Sindh who have this singular
qualification but have no interested and the Sikhs thus have no one
to represent them in the body of the law makers. Many Sikhs in
Karachi are believed to have voted for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
(MQM) in the recent polls. The MQM-led city government gave salary
in advance to its Hindu and Sikh employees ahead of their religious
holidays and also gave them the day off. While to some in US or
elsewhere, this won’t seem much but when you get nothing, something
seems a lot bigger.
