SGPC red beacons
not coming too soon
WSN Network
Chandigarh: The
members of SGPC would not have the luxury to flaunt red beacons atop
their vehicles with the Punjab and Haryana High Court making
‘‘absolute’’ the interim stay it had earlier imposed on the use of
beacons by the prime Sikh body, on Thursday. It means the operation
of notification issued by Punjab on November 22, 2007, allowing SGPC
members to use red beacons, has come to a naught till a final
decision is taken on the petition filed by Vineet Mahajan, a
resident of Amritsar.
The directions will
impact 20 SGPC members reaping benefits of government largesse and
they also face the prospects of their security cover, if any, being
withdrawn. Punjab advocate general HS Mattewal said the order meant
a stay till the final judgment as the plea had been only admitted.
Incidentally, during previous hearings, he had submitted that Punjab
would ‘‘reconsider’’ benefits that could be given to SGPC members.
Raising another
issue, the division bench, comprising chief justice Vijender Jain
and justice Jaswant Singh, in its May 29 order asked: “If the SGPC
is a statutory body having its own fund and own constitution, then
how the state with public money can give security cover to its
members?”
