Pak official
briefs envoys from 15 countries on Sikhism
WSN Network
ISLAMABAD: Ambassadors from 35 countries on Sunday paid a visit to
the historic Sikh Temple, Panja Sahib, in Hassan Abdal in Pakistan
in a bid to learn about Sikhism and Sikh history and philosophy but
strangely no Sikh was associated with the briefing. The tour was
conducted by Pakistan's Ministry of Tourism to educate the
diplomatic corps of China, Malaysia, Yemen, Germany, Kenya, Japan,
India, Denmark, Kyrghstan, Ireland and Vietnam about the history of
Sikh religion and the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak.
Ironically, it was a
Muslim, Chairman Evacuee Trust Board Gen Muhammad Javed, who briefed
the diplomats and media about the arrangements made for Sikh
pilgrims. Pakistan has an official body, the PSGPC, but it seems
even this organization was not involved.
The visitors also
went to the sarowar where, according to the legend, Guru Nanak’s
hand is imprinted on a rock from where water has been constantly
gushing for the last 500 years. Except for the local Sikh clergymen,
no scholars of Sikhism were associated. It is not clear whether the
Pakistan authorities planned to take the envoys to other places of
pilgrimage related to Sikhism.
