Each community has certain historical markers, the red letter days
on its calendar of destiny. In contemporary history, Operation
Bluestar was one such marker that signified to the Sikhs the
hegemonic Indian nation state's inability to respond to an inspired
and aspirational movement of the Sikh community. Twenty-four years
later, irrespective of how much the debate has moved forward across
the globe on the issue of human rights and political and social
locations of ethnic communities in the mindscape of world citizenry,
the Indian nationstate remains aloof and removed from any
progressive idea.
The hard fought Democratic ticket race in the US has underlined the
need to grant the space to those who are struggling to be heard, to
recognize the courage of those who are refusing to be condemned as
the unheard. This is a forward march. India is far behind. The WSN
salutes the courage and will of the Sikh community and dedicates
this edition to the martyrs of the aspirational struggle.
