First Ever album of Partaal launched in the UK
WSN Network

LONDON: Stringed instruments and soul-satisfying devotional music dominated the Sunday Sangat at the monumental Gurdwara Southall  when in association with the Thames Valley University, the heritage of Sikh music came alive, reviving keen interest in this contribution of the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ramdas to the world of music.

A 'Partaal Darbar' playing mystical sounds in varying rhythms with the use of rare stringed instruments by well known faces in the world of Gurbani Kirtan, was a treat to the ears and the eyes for the Sikh Sangat which was probably seeing and hearing such a thing for the first time.

Students of the Raj Academy led by their masestro Surinder Singh began the Darbar with a Partaal recital in Rág Ramkali. The students demonstrated how the poetic structure of Gurbani is intended to be sung and gave an example of the intricate fusion of 16, 12, and 14 beat taals within the shabad to complement the poetry.

Professor Surinder Singh, who has been spearheading this Kirtan movement, sang a shabad in Rág Suhee to everyone’s delight. He explained the concept of Partaal and the need for its preservation. He finished with a Partaal in Rág Dhanasri and the carefree nature of this rág charmed the sangat to sing along.

'Partaal – the Rhythms of Life' is available in CD and DVD format. This educational album by Professor Surinder Singh targets everyone interested in the ancient Sikh style of singing and comes with a booklet containing detailed information of Partaal and the history of Sikh music.

The album was officially launched by Lawrie Walker of Thames Valley University and Dr. Parvinder Singh Garcha general secretary of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in the presence of Professor Surinder Singh and many dignitaries present from local academia and professional groups. Peter Rudnick of Thames Valley University; Sarabjit Singh Gupta, Chairman of Duncan and Lewis; Ravinder Singh Khera of Sant Singh Maskeen Trust UK; Tej Kaur Grewal, Tejinder Singh Samra & Bahadur Singh Kalha of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara; international journalist Nirpal Singh Shergill and Bob Singh of Chess International. Dr. Garcha complimented Professor Surinder Singh for his untiring work and hoped that he would continue to revive and maintain Sikh heritage.
