Britain’s first Sikh-Mulsim duo
dance to fame
WSN Network
Have you seen a Sikh and Muslim artiste dance together? Have you
seen a Muslim performing a Michael Jackson tribute act? Have you
come across a unique dance recital as a matter of overcoming
conflict? If you not seen it so far, slouch into a couch and watch
all these in the increasingly popular TV show Britain’s Got Talent.
Suleman Mirza, the law trainee and Madhu Singh, the Heathrow
terminal employee have become a rage with a Youtube viewership of 15
million in less than two weeks. Signature, as their group is called,
has puts its sign of brilliance without being officious about
co-existence and tolerance. The unique mixture of bhangra an pop has
returned immense popularity with a single day’s audition rerun on
YouTube receiving five million viewers.
“Our routine is about togetherness and overcoming conflict,” said
the handsome Mirza. I start the act with a Western dance, and then
Madhu comes on stage. I look down on him because I don’t understand
his culture. He however springs a surprise and works very hard
symbolising immigration, and then we work together and demonstrate
that eve r yone can get on.” This is our
way of promoting diversity, says Madhu Singh. Showing signs of a
mature person making inroads into the religious domain, he says that
“Sikhs are not just taxi drivers, and I want people to understand
that. We do not underplay or undermine our religions.” “People see
headlines when they hear the words ‘Muslim’,” sighs Mirza, “and
though it is difficult we manage to play our chosen role.”
