Under Pa's govt, police finds case

but court digs in

FARIDKOT:
Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh badal, known for his brash ways
and a more brusque style before he became party chief, is in trouble
because of some unfinished chapters he left behind. A court in
Faridcourt has now refused to accept the cancellation report of the
district police in a case of assault and robbery against Sukhbir
Singh Badal after the complainant lodged a protest.
A case under
Sections 392, 323 and 120-B of IPC had been registered by the
Kotkapura city police in June 2006 following directions of the Punjab
and Haryana High Court on a writ filed by Naresh Sehgal, a
journalist who was allegedly assaulted while clicking photographs of
irregularities being committed in the last parliamentary election.
A similar case
at Kotkapura was also filed by one Ajay Verma, a photographer, who
had claimed that he was slapped by Sukhbir. Not so long ago, Ajay
Verma was cajoled to stay silent, thanks to some proactive lobbying
by Sukhbir's friends. Verma now works with Amar Ujala newspaper in
Chandigarh.
After SAD-BJP
came to power, the Punjab
government constituted a committee that recommended to the Home
Department to scrap the case against Sukhbir Badal, claiming that it
was filed on political consideration.
While seeking
permission for reinvestigation, a petition was filed by the
government on the ground that inadvertently two challans had been
filed for a single incident. The court accepted the plea and allowed
a fresh challan.
Claiming that
the allegations during reinvestigation were found false, the police
filed a cancellation report of the case against Badal in the court
of Chief Judicial Magistrate, which summoned the complainant to
record his statement today. Opposing the cancellation of his case,
Naresh Sehgal and an eyewitness reiterated the allegations.
On the request
of the defence counsel, the court adjourned the hearing for August
18 for the cross-examination of Sehgal.
