Jasvir Singh of
Canada will be Punjab’s face in Beijing

CALIFORNIA: On
Saturday, July 26th, the Punjabi American Community of California
organized an event to honor Jasvir Singh and wish him good luck for
his participation in the upcoming Beijing Olympics next month. He is
highly expected to win a medal.
Jasvir Singh hails
from a poor family from a small village in Punjab. The Khalsa Diwan
Society New Westminster, BC Canada in conjunction with other
organizations sponsored him from India back in 2002 and since then,
the 5'3" Weightlifting Champion has won many Gold medals in Canada
and throughout North America. He is the first weightlifter from B.C.
to go to the Olympics in over 20 years.
Some of Singh's
recent achievements include the Canadian Gold Medal in 2006, 2007 &
2008, 2007 World Weightlifting Champion and 2008 Pan Am championship
in Peru and will compete in the 137 pound category in Beijing.
At this event he was
presented a plaque and twenty one thousand US dollars on behalf of
the Punjabi Community of USA.
The event was
organized by Jassie Banga of Jeeway Punjab Entertainment. Funding
was provided by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha of Sacramento, Pitsburg,
Fresno, Bay Area, Fremont, Yuba City, New York, Punjabi American
Heritage Society of Yuba City, Gadar Memorial Foundation Sacramento,
Paramjit Lakha, Suntar Grewal, Manjit Sibia, Janak Sidhar, Triple
Seven Corp/Bob Virk, Paramjit Singh Butta, Satti Chumbar, Kewal
Bolina, Sucha Bharta, Vinod Chumber, Shangara Ralh, Balwinder Ralh,
Kashhmir Heera, Hans Raj Kazla, Des Raj Bangar, Karman Banger,
Balwinder Bhura, Gora Chakwala, Roop Lal Dhir and many other well
wishers. The event was ably MCed by Asokh Bhura.
Jasvir thanked all
his well wishers and promised to do his best to win a medal at
Olympics.
A team from India
failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics but 6 players of Indian
origin in a Canadian Field Hockey team (four of them from Punjab)
will also compete at the Olympics.
