beeline for Punjab

Chandigarh:
Universities dime a dozen. Close on the heels of state having its
first private university in Jalandhar comes a queue. Punjab
government has received proposals from 10 private players, including
the Reliance Industries group led by Anil Ambani, Bharti telecom (Airtel
group), Lord Diljit Rana, Chitkara group, Ryat and Bahra group and
the SGPC which are keen for setting up universities in the state.
In response to these
proposals the government is finalizing a draft bill to be put in
place to allow the setting up of universities in the private sector
in the state. Earlier, the government had allowed 'Lovely
University' to set up its campus near Jalandhar and a law in this
regard was enacted with particular reference to that university.
Of late, keeping into
account the growing interests of private players in setting up
universities, the state government has decided to formulate a broad
policy framework and law in place to enable the opening of
universities in the private sector.
