Ik Munda
Punjabi, Ho!
Lil Champ
Rohanpreet goes the Star way; aims the sky
Gagandeep Kaur
The
witty, enigmatic, energetic, foot-thumping, patka-clad guy,
popularly known as the Prince of Patiala on the sets of Lil’ Champs,
Rohanpreet is all set to become the sequel of Ishmeet Singh, the
winner of Star VOI contest.
The fight gets tougher as all the final six contenders have been the
judges’ best at one point or the other. As the grand finale draws
close, audience voting steps in with its big boots inside the
judgement arena. The 11 year-old singing sensation is on a winning
spree. Owing to the efforts made by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle
and Ishmeet’s victory, the organisation is again geared up for
Rohanpreet’s support appealing to all Sikhs to vote for the shy
young kid.
The Sikh and the Punjabi factor have stirred many a Punjabi and
Sikhs in Punjab as well as abroad and are all set to boost the
campaign. The Sikh attire is making a mark in the entertainment
industry, still oblivious of what lies in store.
The best part of the show has been the way the judges make the small
in height but big in ambition participants to understand the
nitty-gritty’s of music. The judges’ comments have always showed a
positive sign of the winning of Rohanpreet. All through the series,
the judges Suresh Wadkar and Sonu Nigam have applauded the feel of
his voice –the Soz, of the young lad. Asha Bhonsle too talked very
highly of the tonal quality of his voice.
As
Rohanpreet makes it to the final five, it is time for Punjabi
supporters to act and make it possible for the Prince of Patiala to
become the Prince of India. Turban and the Sikh attire in the
entertainment industry only is not the only thing that is required
for the Sikh community to press upon in these troubled times but
surely if the Sikh youth gets an inspiration this way then voting is
not something which is an uphill task.
Talent shows are a new age entertainment recipe and have found their
niche on television. They are much crispier than their old
counterparts. The question still hangs as to-Should
talent be dependent on judges or on peoples’ understanding of music?
For the moment, this should not bother you. If you would like to

Excerpts from the interview with Rohanpreet’ father Gurinderpal
Singh:
WSN: Is Rohanpreet getting any formal training in music?
GS:
Rohan is being trained in music since he was five years old, by my
uncle G.S. Sehgal who is associated with the Jaipur and Punjab
Gharans of music. He is a well known singer, composer and a
lyricist and has been the mentor of Rohan for his training in
Hindustani Classical music.
WSN: Rohan’s stage confidence and acting skills make people bite
their fingers. You being a power lifter, how has the singing verve
caught him and your family’s interests? How do you see your son
setting his goal in life?
GS: My son has chosen to become a singer since his childhood. We
all support him in totality.
WSN: Ishmeet’s victory as the Star voice of India has made the
turban and Sikh look popular in the entertainment circle. Why do you
think that people should vote for your son – because of his Sikh
attire or his singing talent?
GS: I ask for peoples’ votes on the basis of Rohan’s voice quality.
The Sikhi attire does glue the community to vote in numbers but that
is an additional reason to vote. Whether he wins his contest or not,
he surely will bring a good name to the Sikh community in the times
to come. I am grateful to all who continue to support my child.
