candidate

AMRITSAR:
After much
speculation including some that it could be Sukhbir Singh Badal
himself as candidate from the Amritsar (South) seat for the upcoming
bye-poll, the Akali Dal finally announced the name of Inderbir Singh
Bularia, son of Raminder Singh Bularia, whose death had necessitated
the election.
Sukhbir
announced the name on Tuesday, much after the Congress nominee was
declared, but gave no reason for the delay. Both Inderbir and
Congress candidate Navdeep Singh Goldy are currently municipal
councillors. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal addressed
a series of rallies in the constituency for Bularia. Public
Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia was among those present at
the rallies.
Earlier, the PAC
of the Akali Dal had given all authority to Sukhbir to chose the
candidate, a tradition by now in the Akali Dal that has often
elicited flak. With long-running speculation over when Sukhbir Singh
Badal is to take over from father the reins of the state, the latest
round of speculation over whether he himself was going to be a
candidate fitted well with the earlier guess game.
Sukhbir has
already taken over from Badal Sr. as far as the party is concerned,
and that too without any opposition from the so-called powerful
veterans not one of whom made a squealing noise. Badal underlined
Sukhbir’s authority and writ further when he said, “In his capacity
as SAD chief, Sukhbir has to take a decision on the candidate. I am
here only to muster support for the SAD-BJP combine probable.”
Eventually, alongwith the decision also came a stamping of the
authority of Sukhbir on the
PAC.
