Bhattal’s man gets ticket in
by-poll

AMRITSAR:
With a
bye-election due in Punjab from Amritsar (South) seat, the Congress
high command has ensured that Amarinder Singh has more reason to
keep up his fight against Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, the state party
chief. Bhattal’s choice prevailed over that of Amarinder Singh as
municipal councillor Navdeep Singh Goldy (34) got the party ticket
for the Amritsar (South) byelection to be held on May 22. His name
was approved by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. So,
the signs are that the mudslinging may start any day again, the
oneupmanship game will get dirtier and the beginning was made right
away.
Amarinder’s
loyalist, former MLA Harjinder Singh Thakedar, has already made
public the allegations that the Congress ticket was sold and he was
unable to buy it because the price was too high. Bhattal has not
reacted so far. Many are waiting to see whether Amarinder campaigns
for Goldy or not.
Thakedar called
a meeting of his supporters to decide the course of action,
described himself as a committed Congressman but spewed venom on
Bhattal and declared his intention to oppose the official candidate.
His supporters held a protest rally against Goldy’s nomination.
meanwhile, another aspirant, Maninder Singh Hira, accused the
Bhattal camp of “backstabbing”. Goldy, it seems, joined the Congress
only five years earlier.
