Foundation stone of Sri Guru Granth
Sahib World University laid
WSN Network
FATEHGARH SAHIB:
Amid controversy over dropping the word 'Sikh' from its name and
appointing Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia its vice-chancellor, Punjab CM
Parkash Singh Badal finally laid the foundation stone of the Sri
Guru Granth Sahib World University and claimed it would be a unique
institution of higher learning across the globe "to disseminate the
philosophy and ideology of great holy-scripture". Dedicating the
Minar-E-Ikonkar to the nation (India for Badal, not the Sikh nation
-- Ed.) and laying the foundation stone of the campus of university,
the CM said that the new university would not only undertake the
research on different aspects of Sri Guru Granth Sahib but also
carry out comparative study of other religions to enable the
students, researchers and theologians to have better understanding
of all the religions.

Sikh party
objects to excising 'Sikh' word from new varsity's name
WSN Network
FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shiromani Akal Dal (Panch Pardhani) has
slammed the state government for removing the word 'Sikh' from
the name of the new 'Sri Guru Granth Sahib
Vishav
Sikh
University'
and instead naming it only as 'Sri Guru Granth Sahib Vishav
University'.
Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, a national member of the presidium
of the party, said after paving the way for loss of Panjab
University's control, the removal of the word 'Sikh' from the
name of the university just on the eve of its inauguration
raises many questions.
He said the varsity was being tom-tommed throughout as a Sikh
university. He said the university's foundation stone should
have been laid by Five Beloveds, the Panj Pyaras' as per the
highest traditions of inclusivism signified by the Sikh
religion.
Bhai Cheema
also said the party and people have taken strong exception to
the appointment of Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia as the vice-chancellor
of this new university. |

He praised the
SGPC for conceptualization of this great project. Incidentally, the
venture was thought of way back on
September 1,
2004 on the 400th year of the Installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib
in Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar.
The new
university will be administered under a legislation enacted by
Punjab Assembly. The SGPC has transferred 84 acres of land to the
trust that will run the university. The campus is still to witness
construction, though the CM mentioned that the first phase was
likely to be completed by September 1 next year.
Key star at the
foundation event was however, as always, SAD supremo Sukhbir Singh
Badal who also spoke eloquently about education being the core
sector, though his own intellectual skills are not much known. No
Akali leader present said the new university's setting up should
inspire him to partake Amrit. His spin masters prepared a speech
that was punctuated with references to Information technology,
Bio-technology, Nano-technology and Business management studies.
