Sikhs in Pakistan
want to marry in Punjab
WSN Network
NANKANA SAHIB: While
the registration details of the Anand Marriage Act in Pakistan have
still to be resolved, the 10,000 strong Sikh community in Pakistan
desires to have weddings in Punjab, On a visit to Darbar Sahib, the
president of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee Bishan
Singh has said that he has received many requests in this regard.
If there is trade
and free movement of people, then why can't there be marriages is
the question which young Pakistani Sikhs are asking. The visa regime
on both sides of the border is tough for Muslims and others who
would want to marry. Unless there is a major change in the visas,
which are granted for pilgrimage purposes and not personal, the
likelihood of this happening is a distant dream. The two countries
are known not to relax visas even in case of death of near-relatives
on both sides of the fence for relatives and friends. Even the
procurement of the pilgrimage visa is a Herculean task what with the
requirement to travel to Islamabad or Delhi to get the same.
Parkash Singh Badal
has honored the visiting Pak Gurdwara chief and promised an easing
of visa formalities.
