Rotten egg cops ask court to keep
the truth hidden
WSN Bureau
CHANDIGARH:
Fear of
the truth, the ugly truth, coming out, has forced these Punjab
Police officials to rush to keep the veil intact. Fourteen Punjab
Police officers, including five retired ones, against whom Justice
Ranjit Singh of
Punjab
and Haryana High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry for allegedly
killing 10 people of Faridkot and Firozepur districts in fake
encounters during the days of terrorism, have moved an application
seeking directions that the government should not hand over the
records to the CBI.
After
preliminary hearing of the petition, the Division Bench of Chief
Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Jaswant Singh issued the notice
for July 9. The petitioners pleaded that they had "reliably learnt
that" the Punjab government was going to hand over the records to
the CBI to investigate into the case following a Single-Judge
ruling. They further said that since the High Court had earlier
issued notice regarding stay on the ruling of the Single Judge of
the High Court, the state government should be directed not to hand
over the records to the CBI. They submitted that if the records
pertaining to the police cases were handed over to the CBI, the
Central investigating agency would lodge FIRs against all the
respondents.
The cops against
whom the CBI probes were ordered and who have challenged the order
before the Division Bench are Assistant Commandant, 4 IRB,
Kapurthala, Bachan Singh Randhawa; former DSP Gurmej Singh; former
inspector Darshan Singh; ASI Dalwinder Singh; SI Hardial Singh;
retired head constable Gurdev Singh; ASI Om Parkash; retired IG
Bakshi Ram; IG Lok Pal Jaswinder Singh; SP K.B. Singh; IG, IRB, and
MD, Punjab Police Housing Corporation, M.K. Tiwari; retired SSP
Surjit Singh; DIG, PAP Jalandhar, Ishawar Chander; and SP Chief
Minister's Security A. Gautam.
The complainant,
a resident of Talwandi Bhai village of Ferozepur district, had
stated that these police officers and officials when posted in
Ferozepur had arrested 10 people, who "were murdered in Moga CIA
Staff Police Station", and that the deceased were shown as killed in
encounters.
