Dal
Khalsa rues SGPC silence on 84 memorial
WSN Network
AMRITSAR:
The silence of the SGPC on the issue of erecting a memorial for
those who died during the army attack on Darbar Sahib in June 1984
was decreed by Dal Khalsa in a statement issued here.
In a letter sent
to the president of the SGPC by fax, party general secretary Kanwar
Pal Singh and party leader Harcharanjit Singh Dhami reminded the
SGPC of the executive committee resolution passed in February 2002
committing itself to the raising of a memorial in memory of those
who embraced martyrdom during the attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984.
"It is
regrettable that in the last six years, not even the blueprint of
the memorail has been prepared. The SGPC has a 'rich history' of
passing resolutions but a 'poor record' of implementing it, the
leaders said.
In these last
six years, no president of the SGPC had the courage of committment
to live upto the resolutions passed and all efforts have been made
to brush the issue under the carpet.
The letter urged
Jathedar Avtar Singh to break his silence and take the lead to lay
the foundation stone of the memorial as the Sikh nation prepares to
observe the 24th anniversary of Operation Bluestar next
week.
"Such a memorial
instills a sense of pride amongst the Sikhs and inspires them, lends
a rightful place to the martyrs, provides solace to the families and
will become a permanent reminder defeating the designs of those who
have been attempting to erase this period from public memory", the
leaders said.
Dal Khalsa
hailed the decision of the SGPC to extend financial compensation to
the families of Sikh officers and jawans killed during the Nov '84
Delhi
pogrom.
