SGPC floats saplings idea to save girl child
WSN Network

AMRITSAR: The SGPC has finally thought of a novel idea, but years after it was first suggested by many experts. Under a plan called “Nanhi Chaan”, the SGPC in association with the Punjab government and a private company, will ensure that people visiting Harmandar Sahib get free saplings to be named after the girl child, along with water from the holy ‘sarovar’, from August 27 onwards.

“There is a strong parallel in the bonds between a mother and child on one hand and trees and the earth on the other. So these two ideas are brought together through the ‘Nanhi Chhaan’ scheme,” said DC Kahan Singh Pannu. He said the saplings (‘buta prasad’) could either be planted by newly wed women or mothers with daughters.

The initiative is the brain child of Harpal Singh, chairman of Ranbaxy Laboratories and Impact Projects. “Apart from saplings of ‘neem’ and ‘ber’, which find mention in Gurbani, saplings of other species suitable to the environ ment will be distributed,” said Harpal.

The district administration is planning to distribute more than 2 lakh saplings, which are being provided by the Forest Department, till September 30.

About 50,000 saplings have reached Harmandar Sahib.

SAD president Sukhbir Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur will launch the scheme from the ‘galliara’ of Harmandar Sahib. Incidentally, Sukhbir and his family had come under strong criticism when a whole lot of ads had appeared in the media thanking God for giving a 'waaris' to the family. The ads appeared after Sukhbir and his wife were blessed with a son. The couple have an elder daughter, who apparently was not seen as a rightful 'waaris' by family and its well wishers.
