Hindutva terror in Orissa as
frenzied VHP mobs burn women, attack churches
WSN Network
Bhubaneswar:
VHP's frenzied mobs displayed the Hindutva brand of spiritualism by
burning women alive, attacking churches and killing innocent
Christians to avenge the death of a Hindu holyman.
The ugly face of
Hindutva terror hit the world's conscience in Orissa this week where
seven people were killed, four in police firing, as Kandhamal
district saw unabated violence, taking the toll to nine. Two women
were burnt alive but shameless Hindu groups like Vishwa Hindu
Parishad wanted apology and sought resignation of Biju government.
The Biju Janta
Dal's Navin Patnaik government has an alliance with the right wing
Hindu BJP. The violence came as a backlash to the killing of VHP
leader Laxmanananda Saraswati.
Curfew was
clamped in all major towns of the district.
Four persons
persons were killed when the police opened fire to disperse a mob
which attacked places of worship, prayer halls and shops at
Barakhama in Kandhamal district, Director General of Police Gopal
Chandra Nanda said.
Three persons
were killed when their houses were torched in Raikia area around
midnight
on Monday night, official sources said.

Sikhs condemn saffron terror
Various Sikh
organizations, including the Dal Khalsa, have strongly condemned
attacks on churches in Orissa and said the lawlessness was
prevailing in most parts of the country because of the
intolerant behaviour of the Hindutva forces.
The party
president H S Dhami in a statement stated that by going berserk
the frenzy mob of Hindutva forces has damaged chruches and
houses in Orissa.
He blamed
the BJP for flaring up communal passion in the country to gain
electoral benefits. "The BJP and its offshoots were playing with
fire", he said and warned that majority fundamentalism breeds
minority fundamentalism. |

Frenzied mobs of
Hindus set to fire a missionary-run orphanage burning to death two
people, including a 45-year-old woman, employed as a cook in the
missionary school in Orissa’s Bargarh district. The school was set
on fire by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protesters. The pastor
running the school was also injured.
The VHP-sponsored
bandh, to protest the killing of Saraswati and four disciples,
witnessed attacks on churches and missionary schools across the
state, reminiscent of the Graham Staines case in January 1999.
In state capital
Bhubaneswar, protesters stoned a church; churches in Kandhamal,
Bargarh, Koraput Deogarh districts were also attacked.
Some Christians
staying in institutions or bungalows are hiding in jungles or
villages. Said Balasore Bishop Reverend Thomas Thiruthalil, chairman
of Orissa Bishop’s Council: "These are planned attacks on
minorities. We need police protection; minorities should be able to
move freely and their rights to worship must be protected."
