Fighting For Monika Devi
Death of Sportsmanship
People’s Power to fight Discrimination

The events of the last week have
shown that Indian sports administrators are nothing but
politicians out to exploit sportspersons and their glory. The
manner in which Suresh Kalmadi walked out of Indian President
Ms. Pratibha Patil’s honour ceremony of bronze winning wrestler
Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijendra Singh is nothing but shocking.
To add insult to injury, Sushil
Kumar traveled from his hotel to the house of L. K. Advani in a
three-wheeler as no vehicle arrangement had been done for him.
He could not hire a cab! |

Dear WSN
Readers:
Last week, I
wrote an Open letter to Indian Sports Minister, Dr. Manohar Singh
Gill, which evoked substantial emotional and studied response from
WSN readers in Manipur and those who have the interest of sports and
Manipur at heart.
I am overwhelmed
by the kind words of our readers. I reiterate the words of one of
the readers that we need to shout from the roof tops for our rights
and build people’s power. Otherwise, change is too far away.
This response
encourages me to continue to wield the pen for causes dear to my
heart. World Sikh News presents a sprinkling of the response
received by email.
We hope to live
up to the ideals of the teaching of teaching of Guru Nanak, which
is, "Truth is Higher, but Higher still is truthful living”, which is
the source of our inspiration.

Dear
Jagmohan,
You have
done well writing the Open Letter and said pertinent things too
about the pathetic state of affairs... "Discrimination" must
end... at all fields. More power to you.

Dear
Jagmohanji,
Greetings.
I am R. K.
Shivachandra and read your open letter to the Sports Minister of
India from http://worldsikhnews.com just today. Your expression
is simply wonderful and that is all I wanted to express to you.
Though I
don’t have any ill feeling against the man called Mr. Kalmadi
but one thing I am very sure that he is a crook and a No.1
manipulator, who throws money around lavishly in every Indian
Olympic Association Election to retain in the power. His motive
is purely business in sports. Many like minded people group
along with him and they are all responsible for killing sports
in India.
I would
continue to defy him from the very core of my heart. I bagged a
gold medal in the International Ambassador’s Taekwondo Meet in
Seoul, South Korea in 1994 and few more national medals in
India. I was teaching Taekwondo in Rajasthan in early 80s than
to Nagaland. I write sometimes in e-pao.net purely for my own
pleasure.
Monica’s
case is a pure conspiracy. There is no worse conspiracy other
than this. Mr. RK Naidu and his partners in crime need to be
punished. Yes, your abler pen has well described that there is
not a single probe/enquiry in India that begets result.
Whatever may
be…. your letter to the Sports Minister should hopefully hit the
nail right on the head.
By the way I
want to convey you that there was a meeting of all the NGOs in
Manipur to discuss the Monika case in the office chamber of
Minister of Sports, Manipur. When I presented a down loaded copy
of your Open letter, everybody in the meeting including the
Sports Minister appreciated the way you had highlighted her
case.
Let God
continue to give you strength spirit so as to enable you to
write more and more and also to keep the World Sikh News
aspiration alive that is “because the truth needs to be told.”
With
regards,
Sincerely
yours
R.K. Shivachandra |

Dear
Jagmohan,
I happen to
come across your open letter (in the World Sikh news), addressed
to the Union Sports Minister, Shri M.S. Gill, expressing anguish
about the Monika Devi's "doping case".
If what I
have read is true and genuine, it is encouraging enough to feel
satisfied that at least there are still some people; NOT
belonging to these tiny states of the country; (states with no
political or numerical strength and voice in parliament); who
are equally concerned about sports persons from such or other
states being discriminated against. This situation in our sports
arena seems to be occurring due to sheer lack of concern for
India's performance at international level competitions and the
over jealous attitude of these nepotistic guardians of sports.
It's very
disheartening when we mull over the medal figures and the
billion plus human potential that this great nation is endowed
with. We as a nation are mediocre in our thoughts; a couple of
sports glory in SAF games can burst our chests with over
inflated pride. A country like China; who in the minds of the
Mandarins of Indian policy makers, are a perpetual adversary;
decided to host the Olympics and beat the Americans in the medal
tally. Well they are almost through. It must have taken great
amount of sacrifice and hard work on the part of all concerned,
sports persons, government, politicians, rulers alike, to work
towards seeing their dreams come true. Surely we need to be
modest enough to learn from others.
We dream
great dreams - as advised that a dream is the acorn for the
mighty Oak tree. Beyond that - what !!! What about the desire,
the burning sense of struggle to work towards achieving those
dreams, the support that the nation - state provides to all its
citizens to build up the confidence!!!
One Monika
Devi - being sidelined will not matter to policy makers. But
these small instances of one citizen each will some day make the
citizens lose confidence in the system. That's what these
sporty, sports-mad people of the tiny state of Manipur are
beginning to feel. It will be much more useful to harness these
sports potential, rather than casting them away as political non
entities.
Maybe, a
couple of Olympics medal prospects are latent in the area!!
Hope that
your open letter is read by the concerned Minister and that it
may make some changes for the better. But again, that's a hope
only. It may remain a dream!!! That is someone really
listening....
With best
regards,
Colonel Manongba Lourembam (Retd) |

Dear Mr.
Jagmohan Singh,
This is
regarding the Open Letter regarding the recent Monica doping
issue. We are grateful to you for the support and fairness that
you have shown in highlighting the issue.
Articles
such as yours would do a lot to bring up our sports and also
people all over India together. As such, Manipur is crying in
grief; a support from Ludhiana is symbolic and heart soothing.
In this regard, We in Northeasterner Website, would be happy to
reproduce your open letter in www.northeasterner.in .
Looking
forward.

Regards.

net. I realised that at least there is some one who has
considered us as one of them.

Dear
Jagmohan Singh,
You have
written a perfect story of how politics play a role in
destroying someone’s sports career. Since the day Mokina
returned home in Manipur, there have been mass rallies and
protests everywhere. There is turmoil everywhere with some 6-7
days of bandh in the capital Imphal.
It is not
the first time people from the North East are being looked down
or manipulated for their own ends.
In every
sports, Manipur has produced exemplary sportsperson despite the
zero infrastructure that it has. Hope is not lost, Monika will
still fight for the allegations she has faced.
We all are
with her. A Manipuri will never quit, I know, when it comes to
ones dignity.
Regards,
Dwipen Khwairakpam
