Court stays
Jallianwala Bagh alteration
WSN Network
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has imposed an
immediate stay on any alteration, demolition or tampering of the
entrance, structures and buildings of the Jallianwala Bagh National
Memorial complex in Amritsar.
Acting on a public
interest litigation (PIL), the division bench of Chief Justice
Vijender Jain and justice Mahesh Grover issued notices for September
28 to Punjab chief secretary, Amritsar deputy commissioner,
chairperson of Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust and the
Union cultural affairs ministry. The PIL said every aspect of the
national memorial needed to be preserved in its original form.
Earlier, media
reports had indicated that demolition of the entrance and building
had been undertaken to provide parking space for VIPs who would
assemble during the birth centenary celebrations of Shaheed Bhagat
Singh on September 28. However, secretary of the Trust SK Mukherji
denied that the Trust had any plans of demolishing or altering the
entrance or any structure within the complex. He added that the
Trust had not undertaken any such step, as it would mean complete
disregard for history.
