CHANDIGARH:
A Chandigarh court has convicted four Babbar Khalsa International (BKI)
members claiming they were trying to revive terrorism in Punjab
after a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from them
near PGI here on March 21, 2006. It is almost routine for Punjab
Police to slap such cases and for the courts to fully rely on police
theories.
The court has awarded a five-year jail term along with a fine of Rs
5,000 to Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukhi alias Bullet for possessing a
prohibited weapon (AK- 47). Dilbag Singh was sentenced to fiveyear
jail under the Arms Act for possessing RDX. Ranjit Singh and Balbir
Singh alias Nepali were awarded a threeyear jail term each along
with a fine of Rs 3,000under the Arms Act.
The police had claimed to have recovered an AK-47 rifle and 15
cartridges from Sukhi, a .38 bore Colt revolver and five cartridges
from Balbir Singh, 1-kg RDX from Dilbag Singh and a .12 bore gun and
two cartridges from Ranjit Singh.
Sukhi, Dilbag Singh and Ranjit Singh were residents of Ropar, while
Balbir Singh was from Solan in Himachal Pradesh. All of them were,
as per the police story, associates of BKI activist Paramjit Singh
Bheora.
The police had alleged that the four were working for Jagtar Singh
Tara, a prime suspect in the assassination of former Punjab chief
minister Beant Singh. The police had rested their case on the CD of
the wedding ceremony of Sukhi, a journalist with a Hindi newspaper,
at Kurali, which Tara had attended. Dilbag Singh was also present.
The police had alleged that Dilbag Singh was the senior
vice-president of SAD (A) in Ropar district. A motorcycle was also
recovered from Sukhi that was allegedly provided to him by Tara. The
police had said the accused had told them that they were part of a
Babbar Khalsa module and were in constant touch with other activists
to revive terrorism.
