Sirsa killer free but 27 Sikhs
in Mumbai still behind bars
WSN Network
MUMBAI:
Twenty-seven Sikhs arrested after first day of protests are still
behind bars. Instead of moving to arrest the Dera Sirsa killer sadh,
Mumbai police moved against the Sikhs, arresting 27 youth a day
after protests exploded across Mumbai and Sikhs had stopped road and
rail traffic for some time after the killing of Balkar Singh by
sadh's illegally deployed private security guards.
A holiday court
at Bhoiwada on Sunday remanded them in police custody till June 24.
On June 24th, they were released on bail but were re-arrested, this
time by the Railway Police. Clearly, there was a design to victimise
the victims. Till the writing of this news, they were at the Thane
police station. No senior SGPC leader or Akali Dal leader had gone
to meet them.
Most of the
arrested are residents of suburbs like Andheri (E), Chembur and Sion.
They had arrived in cars and bikes to Mulund on Saturday to stage
protests. All belong to the Sikh community.
ACP Prakash Wani
said even more arrests were likely. Four separate cases of rioting,
destruction of public property and obstruction to traffic have been
registered at the Navghar and Mulund police stations and the Kurla
railway police station.
There are around
2 lakh Sikhs in Mumbai and a large majority of them live in
Sion-Koliwada area.
Mumbai police
commissioner Hasan Gafoor displayed sanity as he dismissed the show
of kirpans and said "the kirpan is part of their religious faith."
