Punjab pays Pak prisoners through its nose
WSN Network

CHANDIGARH: For years, many Pakistani prisoners in Punjab jails have been languishing despite having completed their jail terms and despite the Punjab and Haryana High Court clearly telling the authorities to release them forthwith. Now, the state has been forced to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to these Pakistani prisoners, most of whom are lodged in the Central Jail of Amritsar.

Punjab has so far paid Rs 20 lakh as compensation to 42 Pakistani prisoners as per the orders of a bench comprising Justices H.S. Bedi and Ranjit Singh that had ordered payment of Rs 10,000 per year to each Pakistani prisoner languishing in Punjab jails on the completion of their sentence till the High Court judgment day, besides Rs 100 everyday from that day till their repatriation.

Eleven prisoners are still to be repatriated and have been getting compensation in view of this April 26, 2006 order of the High Court, a newspaper report said.

There are 38 more Pakistani prisoners still lodged in the Amritsar jail despite completing their sentence long ago. Abdul Sharif (Sakhi) Gulam Ahmed completed his sentence in July 1997. Similarly, Mukhtar Ahmed of Kasur completed his sentence nine years ago. Among the three women prisoners, Shukla Ghosh completed her sentence in October 2000, Farzeena Sareen in November 2007 and Seema in January 2008.
