Punjab pays Pak prisoners through
its nose

CHANDIGARH: For
years, many Pakistani prisoners in Punjab jails have been
languishing despite having completed their jail terms and despite
the Punjab and Haryana High Court clearly telling the authorities to
release them forthwith. Now, the state has been forced to pay a
compensation of Rs 20 lakh to these Pakistani prisoners, most of
whom are lodged in the Central Jail of Amritsar.
Punjab has so
far paid Rs 20 lakh as compensation to 42 Pakistani prisoners as per
the orders of a bench comprising Justices H.S. Bedi and Ranjit Singh
that had ordered payment of Rs 10,000 per year to each Pakistani
prisoner languishing in Punjab jails on the completion of their
sentence till the High Court judgment day, besides Rs 100 everyday
from that day till their repatriation.
Eleven prisoners
are still to be repatriated and have been getting compensation in
view of this

order of the High Court, a newspaper report said.
There are 38
more Pakistani prisoners still lodged in the
Amritsar jail
despite completing their sentence long ago. Abdul Sharif (Sakhi)
Gulam Ahmed completed his sentence in July 1997. Similarly, Mukhtar
Ahmed of Kasur completed his sentence nine years ago. Among the
three women prisoners, Shukla Ghosh completed her sentence in
October 2000, Farzeena Sareen in November 2007 and Seema in January
2008.
