Lord Swraj Paul's Caparo group
ditches PTU

JALANDHAR: The
Caparo PTU School of Manufacturing and Materials Technology was
hailed when Lord Swraj Paul had backed it up but now things have
taken a foggy turn and the Punjab Technical University (PTU) is even
thinking of snapping ties with the Caparo group as the latter has
failed to fulfil its commitment about providing requisite
infrastructure within the stipulated time period.
Counselling for
B.Tech (electronics), B.Tech (mechanical) and B.Tech (IT) is to
begin on June 30 but the Caparo group has not helped improve the
school's infrastructure. The PTU authorities see this as a breach of
the April 15 pact with university officials.
Tejinder Kaur,
Vice-Chancellor-cum-Principal Secretary, Technical Education and
Industrial Training, has sought a detailed report from member
secretary of the PTU Caparo Society Dr V Arora to take the final
decision in this regard.
It seems that
UK steel
magnate Lord Swraj Paul, a native of Jalandhar, has backtracked from
his promise of making this institution world class by not pumping in
Rs 50 lakh to provide bare minimum infrastructure for the first
batch. There was to be a boys hostel, sports infrastructure,
adequate laboratories and workshops and faculty, but nothing has
come through.
The Caparo group
seemed more interested in transfer of 10 acres land worth over Rs 10
crore in the name of PTU Caparo Society so that it could be
mortgaged to raise loan for infrastructure development. Meanwhile,
Paul has preferred not to release any payments.
