Indian workers kill CEO of Italian
firm after tiff
WSN Network
NOIDA: In a
shocking incident, angry workers of a Rs 360-crore Italian concern
in India lynched to death the CEO of the company near the national
capital right inside the premises.
The incident
jolted the corporate world even as the police arrested more than 100
retrenched workers for the murder but the government said "simmering
discontent among the workers" was the main reason behind the death
of L K Chaudhary, and it should "serve as a warning for the
managements."
Choudhary (47),
the India-head of the Rs 360-crore Graziano Transmissioni India Pvt
Ltd, was killed when a meeting to discuss the dismissal of over 125
workers turned violent.
Later, police
charged 136 people with rioting and murder but Union Labour Minister
Oscar Fernandes said, "It is my appeal to the managements that the
workers should be dealt with compassion."
The problem over
the dismissed workers has been simmering for some time and the
incident occured when both sides had reached an understanding but
the management pushed things over the edge by asking some to sign
self-incriminating statements.
After a fracas
ensued, security guards fired and all hell broke loose. Choudhary
wife Ratna is a Reader in the Physics Department of Delhi
University's Kirori Mal College. His brother stays in Toronto.
