Soon, SMS facility to
seek justice
WSN Bureau
Chandigarh: Hail SMS, the latest and the fastest way to disseminate
information. Companies are increasingly using this facility to the
hilt for providing data in accordance with the wishes of the clients
or customers. The Punjab and Haryana high court does not want to be
found lagging on this aspect and has ventured into the arena of SMS.
In
a first-of-its-kind in the country that will bring cheers to scores
of jaded litigants and lawyers of the region, the high court is all
poised to harness the power of SMS to disseminate information on
case status.
Its computerization committee, headed by justice Hemant Gupta, is
exuding enthusiasm over the move that would become a reality by next
week. In fact, it is owing to Justice Gupta’s unstinting efforts to
put the HC on a fast techno track, despite serious shortage of
skilled staff, that a Delhi-based company was roped in to put into
effect a user-friendly, easyon-pocket plan based on short messaging
service.
“The SMS facility is based on a two-tier system. In the first stage,
the litigants will be able to know the filing status of their
petitions as to whether their plea has been duly registered or any
objection has been raised thereto. The second stage will result in
litigants and lawyers ascertaining the current status of the
petition,” justice Gupta said.
The implications of this are manifold. The service will
substantially reduce the hectic chase for ascertaining the status of
pleas by lawyers and petitioners alike. In fact, the move is godsend
for litigants who come from faraway towns of
Punjab and Haryana just to know how their case is proceeding. The
facility will be code-based and a litigant or lawyer has to merely
send an SMS with writ number at nominal premium service charges to
know within minutes the status of his case.
