EU MP to
take up turban issue
WSN Network
Promising
support to the Sikh community, European Union parliamentarian
Godfrey Bloom said he would raise the turban issue in EU Parliament
so that no discrimination was done with Sikhs in
Europe.
Addressing mediapersons at a press conference Bloom, said, “I have
due respect for the identity of Sikhs and would strongly take up the
turban issue with the European Union when I go back. Whatever has
happened in
France is
unfortunate and must not have happened.” “There are many Sikhs
living in my constituency of Yorkshire and I know their culture and
history For those who misread . their identities at times need to be
educated,” added Bloom.
Bloom said the
case of Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar, facing death penalty in India,
should also be taken up. Daljit Singh Bittu, chief of the SAD (Amritsar)
faction, and Gurjatinder Pal Singh Bhikiwind were among those
present on the occasion. Bloom, who deals with humanitarian and
minority issues, criticised China for its aggression against Tibet.
“Tibet has an impressive culture but I fail to understand China’s
stupidity in creating problems for
Tibet,”
he said.
On the case of
Sarabjit Singh, who faces death penalty in Pak istan, Bloom said,
“The case requires a fair trial. However, I feel that External
Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, apart from demanding clemency for
Sarabjit, should also show the same spirit in the case of Paramjit
Singh, who is in an Indian jail for the past two years on the charge
of possessing RDX.” “Paramjit is a citizen of the European Union but
the latter has failed to take up his case in a proper way I would
raise the matter in Parliament when I go back to the UK.
