Retd prof translates eight English classics into Punjabi

Mansa: The abridged Punjabi translation of eight classic masterpieces of world literature done by Prof Achhru Singh, former head of department of English, Nehru Memorial Government College, Mansa were released by Prof. Ajmer Singh Aulakh, an internationally renowned Punjabi playwright and president of Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha.

The titles translated are Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma", Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities", "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist", Rudyard Kipling's "Kim", Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and H.G. Wells's "The Invisible Man".

Prof. Aulakh said that no writer is alien and no writing is out of bounds for a person dedicated to reading and desirous of widening his mental horizon. He appreciated that Prof. Achhru Singh has taken up with a missionary zeal the stupendous task of translating English classics into Punjabi because it is a herculean task to translate one culture into other keeping the content and spirit of the subject intact.

Prof. Achhru Singh speaking about his venture said that his humble contribution for the enrichment of my mother tongue through the medium of translation is receiving a very encouraging response from the Punjabi readers He said that the world classics have continued to make an indelible impact on the minds of the readers through the ages.

He said that his mission is to translate at least fifty classics of the world into Punjabi. He said that his wife Gursharn Kaur, who is an M.A. in Punjabi and is a housewife, helps him in these translations.

Dr. Jagtar Singh Joga, Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Darshan Joga, Devinder Singh, Harbhajan Sidhu Mansa, Raghubir Dhand, Darshan Mitwa, Manjit Chahal, Gurpreet, Dr. P.K.Sood, Balwant Bhatia and Gurbachan Singh Sidhu also praised the effort.
