Perverser Politics, Reverse Roles in vendetta
groove
WSN Bureau
Chandigarh: Punjab politics seems to
have refused to come out of the damned groove it has gotten stuck
into. This time it is the turn of the Akalis to set the pace. Former
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh quietly slipped away to London, just
a couple of days after it became known that Bharat Inder Singh
Chahal, his heavyweight Man Friday, fixer and
trouble-maker-cum-trouble-shooter-rolled-into-one, has already
vanished to Dubai and from there to a more glamorous western
destination, possibly London.
CM Parkash Singh Badal continues to harp on his
we-will-not-be-vindictive tune; his notes keeping the pace with the
daily warnings issued by his son, the newly anointed acting
president of the Akali Dal Sukbir Singh Badal who even announced
that all government departments have been asked to look for scams
which happened during the previous government.
The Vigilance Bureau became just as active as it was during
Amarinder Singh's initial days. The only difference is that the then
VB machinery went after the Akalis with a vengeance, and now the new
dispensation will go after the Congressmen. On his part, Badal did
well by appointing a man with a killer spirit at the helm of the VB
in order to achieve results. After all, Sumedh Saini was the officer
whose role remained under cloud during the days of militancy.
Now the new Chief Secretary has gotten down to brass tacks and the
first decision he took was to refer the case of Ludhiana City Centre
scam to the Vigilance Bureau. One can safely assume that there will
be a lot more arrests.
But Amarinder Singh's woes may soon increase. From the ongoing
behaviour of the Congressmen in the Punjab Assembly, it seems they
will prefer to either lump or ignore all insults heaped at Amarinder
Singh or BIS Chahal and many of them would rather silently welcome
the duo's harassment.
For the record, the Governor's address in the Assembly (which the
Governor only reads out as the text is drafted and cleared by the
Council of Ministers) also talked about ending the system of
political vendetta. Dominated by aggressive Amarinder bashing, the
Governor's address said the vendetta style of politics had lead to
politicisation of bureaucracy and criminalisation of politics.
