Flying Somewhere this Thanksgiving?
If you are traveling
over the holiday season, take along your Guidelines for Sikh Air
Travelers, to make sure that your rights are respected.
New York: The TSA's new search policy
for Sikh turbans will have been in effect for a month in a few days'
time. In order to go back to the government and let them know how
they're doing, the Sikh Coalition has invited the Sikh traveling
public to share its experiences at America's airports.
After months of advocacy, the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA) implemented a new policy for checking turbans on October 27.
Under the current procedure, Sikhs can pat-down their own turbans,
instead of allowing someone else to touch their turbans when
clearing security in US airports.
Since the new policy went into effect, the coalition said it had
heard that sometimes Sikhs are given the option of the self
pat-down, sometimes they have to ask for it, and sometimes they
aren't subjected to secondary screenings at all. To continue the
fight for Sikh rights, it has asked people to document their travel
stories.
The Sikh Coalition has exhorted the Sikh public to tell about their
screening experiences over the Thanksgiving weekend -- good or bad
-- so that it can tell the TSA what the Sikh people think.
