Yet another witness ready to expose Tytler

CHANDIGARH: Giani Surinder Singh, whose pictures taken by a hidden camera by a private TV channel last month, were shown by the Indian media recounting his horrible ordeal during the 1984 Sikh carnage, has declared that he would depose before the CBI against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. Singh also sought police protection, a permanent shift to Punjab and rehabilitation before he appears before the CBI.

Talking to the media, Giani Surinder Singh, who often turned tearful talking about the threat to his family members’ lives, particularly his Canada-based son, also said that he had decided to depose against Tytler only after he got assurance of help from the Akal Takht and a public assurance by SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar.

‘’Now, if I die, Jagdish Tytler should be held responsible for my death,’’ he stated in an affidavit. Giani Surinder Singh, who is now serving as granthi in a gurdwara in Majnu ka Tila in Delhi, was serving at Gurdwara Pulbangash when the anti-Sikh riots were started on November 1, 1984.

Legal experts termed his statement as ‘’much more important than even that of Jasbir Singh.’’ Jasbir is another witness, who is now in the USA and who has refused to come back to India to appear in court on the ground that he faces a threat to his life at the hands of Tytler.

Shameless Tytler says it’s a lie

Showing no signs of shame or remorse, Jagdish Tytler told the media, “I don’t know what the intentions of Giani Surinder Singh are behind this lie. I have given an official tape from Doordarshan to the CBI, showing that I was at least 30 kms away from the spot where the incident happened. Can Singh produce another witness who can say that I was there?”

While Jasbir was not an eye-witness to the incident in which Tytler led and incited a mob against Sikhs, Giani Surinder Singh was an eye-witness. Jasbir heard Tytler addressing a meeting of supporters a few days after the violence where the latter was allegedly getting angry with his men for not having killed enough Sikhs as compared to other localities. Giani Surinder Singh actually saw Tytler leading the mob and ordering his men to kill more and more Sikhs. According to his statement before the Nanavati Commission in 2002, Singh saw Tytler leading a mob outside Gurdwara Pulbangash and allegedly told the looting marauders to ‘’first kill the Sikhs who have killed our mother. You can carry on looting later,’’ said Singh, recalling Tytler’s words in his statement before the commission.

Claiming that he was still being threatened by Tytler, Singh said he got a call from the Congress leader about a fortnight back when Tytler reportedly told him that he had lost his ministerial berth because of Surinder’s statement. ‘’I was threatened that my entire family would be wiped out and I would be killed in an accident, if I continue to speak against him,’’ he told mediapersons.

‘’My son’s life is in danger,’’ he said, tears streaming down his eyes. Admitting that he had gone back on his statement made before Nanavati Commission, he said, ‘’I also told the commission that I am disclosing the truth now, only because there is no Congress government at the Centre.”
