High Court sets up panel for couples seeking security
WSN Network

CHANDIGARH: This is the sign of the times. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has constituted a committee comprising Home Secretaries and senior advocates to evolve a mechanism for redressing the grievances of runaway couples and their parents. The committee will consist of the Advocates General of Punjab as well as Haryana, standing counsel of Chandigarh, apart from Home Secretaries of the two states and also the Union Territory.

The Haryana Advocate General being the senior most would act as the convener of this committee. The High Court has also proposed to include senior ad- Singh vocates Rajinder Cheema and M.L. Sarin and advocate Rajiv Godara as members. Recently, Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia had directed the states to evolve a “compassionate mechanism” to redress the grievances of the couples and the parents, and had directed the Home Secretaries of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to inform the court about the system they wanted to develop.

Till the committee submits its report, the High Court has ordered to stay the proceedings in cases registered against couples before the court. The protection to the married couples granted earlier would continue.  The move to set up the committee comes in the wake of the High Court taking notice of a rising number of cases involving newlyweds against the wishes of parents.
