AMRITSAR:
Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan, along with wife Jaya, son
Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya, paid obeisance at the Golden
Temple on Saturday.
The Bachchan family accompanied by family friend and Samajwadi Party
leader Amar Singh reached the temple amidst a tight security cover.
The family was here to offer prayers at the shrine after the demise
of Amitabh's Sikh mother Teji Bachchan.
They reached the temple in a chartered bus from a private hotel,
with more than 70 personal security guards besides an extra security
cover of the Punjab Police. Bachchans spent 20 minutes inside the
sanctorum and listened to kirtan.
Several Sikh organizations, meanwhile, protested against a special
welcome having been accorded to the Bachchan family when the actor's
role in instigating the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 was well known.
Akali Dal (Amritsar) leader Simranjit Singh Mann joined the chorus
of condemnation of the SGPC's act of presenting a siropa to Bachchan.
An SGPC spokesman however denied that the gurdwara management
extended a special welcome to the Bachchans, who he said were
treated like common visitors to the shrine.
