SGPC chief hits out at Akal
Takht
WSN Network
Amritsar: Peeved
with the ongoing series of seminars and discussions and a move of
the Dal Khalsa to set up a committee for laying down the procedure
for selection of Jathedars of the five Takhts, SGPC president Avtar
Singh Makkar has said that such groups had no right to challenge the
authority of the SGPC and Akal Takht.
"The SGPC is the
legal and official body that deals with the management of Sikh
shrines and no one else can interfere in its matters," said Makkar,
criticising former SGPC member Manjit Singh Calcutta for supporting
the committee.
The Dal Khalsa had
prepared a document on the overall working of Jathedars of the five
Takhts at a Sikh conclave on March 9. It had also set up a 17member
committee comprising scholars and academicians to look into their
appointment.
The Dal Khalsa has
been critical of the ways in which the SGPC functioned but has so
far avoided direct criticism of its status and has been respectful
towards the authority of the Akal Takht.
