Punjab nods to police raj

In another decision likely to prove controversial once the outcome is known, the Punjab Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal gave its nod for the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on police reforms delivered on a 1996 writ petition filed by one Parkash Singh and others. Effectively it means bringing in a new police act to replace the 1861 Act. Sections within the Punjab bureaucracy as well as wide sections of the citizenry are opposed to the so-called police reforms which in reality give more power to the police than ever before.
