SURREY:
A mural painted by renowned
artist Jarnail Singh was unveiled at Gurdwara Canadian Singh Sabha
in Surrey, on the eve of Vaisakhi amidst slogans of Bole so Nihal.
The mural in the langar hall of the Gurdwara depicts Mata
Khivi serving the langar.
Mata Khivi was wife of Guru Angad Dev and
rendered the service in utmost humility. She used to supervise the
langar and serve food with her own hands, which was always available
to everyone without distinction of caste, religion, riches or
poverty as ordained by the Guru. Mata Ji toiled lovingly in 'Guru ka
langar'.
She is also referred to in the Guru Granth Sahib
for her service. The mural is another step in the ongoing project of
depicting Sikh history through pictures undertaken by the Canadian
Singh Sabha. Artist Jarnail Singh has already painted the
significant events during the period of ten Sikh Gurus in the lobby
of the Gurdwara. This was the first time the Sikh history has
been painted in Canada. Well known for his paintings of Sikh history
and Punjabi culture, Jarnail Singh recently did a Mural
commemorating the story of Komagatamaru, on the PICS Senior housing
unit,which attracted much media attention.
