Supreet Malhi is Miss USA Panjaban

resident Supreet Kaur Malhi has won the Miss USA Panjaban award
becoming the most beautiful Punjabi lady in the United States. She
won this distinction during the first of its kind “Miss USA Punjaban
2008” competition organized by Ludhiana-based Punjabi Sath in
association with Business and
Cultural
Center,
Bakersfield.
Supreet Malhi
will represent
USA in the
international “Miss World Punjaban 2008” meet to be organized in
Ludhiana in December this year. Apart from Ms. Malhi, Manvir Kaur
from Riverside, Amandeep Kaur from Freznoe, Sona Chauhan and
Sikharoop Kaur from Sanfranciso, Sarabjit Kaur from San Jose,
Hardeep Chahal from Taylor Michigan, Navjot Mann from Carona and
Navpreet Kaur from Bakersfield participated in the mega event.
With absolutely
no space to spare, the Dory Theatre hall of the
California
State
University,
Bakersfield was packed to capacity. In the first round,
participants presented solo items including dance performances. In
the song-based dance item category, Sikharoop Kaur presented a
traditional dance and won accolades from all present at the event.
The most talented lady award was given to Sona Chauhan and Hardeep
Chahal won the Intelligent woman award. The soulful rendition of
Haal Muridan da Kehana by Hardeep Chahal connected the audience to
the teachings of Gurus. Manvir Kaur bagged the Queen of Giddha
felicitation.
Inaugurating the
function by lighting a lamp, Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill said that
the Mother Earth of
Punjab, mother
tongue Punjabi and the Punjabi Mother were all in danger today.
Prof. Gill said that “in order to save these three mothers, Punjabis
living in the homeland and in the Diaspora will have to have to
identify their roots and transcend from plain anguish to search of a
solution.
Referring to his
fifteen your journey fighting the proliferation of a sub-culture of
debasement, the chairperson of the Sabhyacharak Trust, Jasmer Singh
Dhatt said that “even he was not sure that it would attract
universal appeal”.
An interesting
feature of the event was that Ms. Asha Sharma, who was a compere of
the first Miss Punjaban competition was again the compere for the
first Miss USA Punjabn feat. Her literary talent and socially
relevant remarks and anecdotes went a long way in making the evening
memorable and keeping the audience spell-bound for five hours at a
stretch.
Dr. Paramjit
Singh Dosanjh of Punjabi Business and Cultural Centre did the
welcome honours and Ajit Singh Bhattal proposed the vote of thanks.
Alongside the
organizers, agro-business giant Charanjit Singh Bath, Principal
Preetam Singh naal and Gursharan Singh Nat felicitated the winners.
The judges comprised of Sukhi Nijjhar of a leading TV channel –Watano
Door in Tornoto, leading author and editor of weekly newspaper Aapna
Punjab –Harwinder Riar, International Giddha exponent Davinderdeep
Kaur Saran, Meena Sanghera and Suneeta Takhar.
Leading signers
Babbu Rupal Sanni Babbar, Dalvir Singh and Miki Saran and humour
artiste Rana Ranbir engaged the audience with their singular
performances.
Prominent
residents of
Bakersfield,
Buck Dhesi, Jatinder Gill, Bob Virk, Parminder Shergill, Tanjeet
Singh, Manmeet Singh and others provided the logistical support for
the function.
Leading
journalists from Sacremento, Hassan Laroya Banga, Kuldip Singh
Dhaliwal, Gurjatinder Singh Randhawa and Harjit Singh Bakersfield
were honoured at the function.
Prof. Gurbhajan
Singh Gill’s ballad against female foeticide, sung by Jasvir Jassi
and the video based on the song were premiered at the function.
Emotionally surcharged members of the audience desired that such
functions should be held in various towns and cities of the
US to enable the
Punjabi youth to get a taste of their Punjabi heritage.
