Rally in
Sarika's support
Supporters
of Sarika Singh on January 15 called for her to be allowed to return
to classes. They held a rally on the steps of the Welsh Assembly in
Cardiff and called for schools to be issued with new guidelines on
uniforms.
Sarika and
her parents Satnam and Sanita declined to speak to reporters at the
protest, which drew cross-party support. The BBC Wales quoted Sarika
as saying: "The protest is for the Welsh Assembly guidelines,
they've had four years now to look through them. They said they were
going to issue them at the beginning of 2008, now 2008 is here we
want to know where the guidelines are."
Valleys
Race Equality Council chairman Dr Rachhpal Singh Randhawa said
stopping Sarika wearing the kara was "against all common sense".
An Assembly
Government spokeswoman said: "There is no legislation in place
specifically covering the wearing of school uniform. Whether or not
a school uniform policy unlawfully breaches the Race Relations Act
1976 is a matter for the courts. The Welsh Ministers do not have
that function under that Act."
