Patna Jathedar tells Sukhbir to
become a Khalsa
WSN Network
CHANDIGARH: Once
the bitter fight starts over some spoils, it becomes easier to
notice the flaws the size of Indian Ocean which one had missed
earlier. Giani Iqbal Singh, the Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar, has now
noticed that the Akali Dal's president Sukhbir Singh Badal, is not
an Amritdhari Sikh and has directed him to become Amritdhari
immediately.
For Sukhbir,
such has been the family tradition that even his father had partaken
of Amrit after a Takht directive during Tercentenary of the Khalsa
in 1999. But for reasons best known to him, the President of the
Akali Dal had been unable to inspire his only son to become
Amritdhari despite working so tirelessly for the quom in whatever
time he could find from ruling
Punjab or trying
to rule it.
The grave crisis
that the dup found itself in while defending itself in multi-crore
rupee corruption cases in small time courts also did not veer them
to the idea of becoming Amritdhari. Now, the Takt Patna Sahib
jathedar has decided to underline the flaw.
The directive
came on Sunday at a function meant to observe Vaisakhi -- by itself
an act of defiance of the Akal Takht since as per the Nanakshahi
calendar, Vaisakhi was on April 14. A meeting of 'Panj Pyaras' (the
five beloved) adopted five resolutions including one that termed it
"most unfortunate that the SAD chief was not a baptised Sikh which
is against the Sikh religious edict."
A report in The
Times of India quoted the jathedar as saying that he had indeed take
n up the issue with Sukhbir during a meeting nearly two months back.
The meeting of
the Panj Pyaras at the Patna Sahib Takht also "rejected" the
seven-member committee set up by Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh
Vedanti to study the Nanakshahi calendar in the wake of earlier
criticism from Patna. The resolution states that Vedanti had
"probably forgotten to include the two other Jathedars, - those from
Patna Sahib and Huzoor Sahib in Maharashtra - and they had no faith
in the committee. Giani Iqbal Singh has refused to accept the
Nanakshahi calendar and is going by the lunar calendar to observe
important anniversaries of Sikh religion."

Makkar summoned again
SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar, who was summoned on April
1 for publication of a book by the SGPC which had highly
objectionable references to the Sikh Gurus, has been asked to
appear again by May 10 or face consequences.
"We had summoned him on April 1, extended the deadline to
April 13, but since he hasn't appeared, we give him till May 10
to come before Takht Patna Sahib or we will take action as per
the norms." In a veiled criticism of SAD patron and Punjab CM
Parkash Singh Badal, another resolution of Sunday, criticised
the way "one political personality was appointing the religious
leadership of SGPC and then using it for political purposes."
Makkar has made it clear that come what may, he shall not appear
before the Takht Patna Sahib. |
