No registrations under Sikh
Marriage Act
WSN Network
ISALAMABAD:
Since the
enactment of the Sikh Marriage Act in May 2008, no Sikh couple’s
wedding has been registered to date. Surprisingly, many couples
married on the last day of Baisakhi celebrations, but none were
registered under the Act, according to information made available by
the Pakistan Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (PSGPC) President
Bishan Singh.
It is learnt
that the Act contains problems such as maintenance, custody of
children, registration of marriage and alimony, which need to be
resolved before it becomes a habit for families to register their
marriages under it. Significantly, two children of Bishan Singh were
married early this month but their marriages too were also not
registered.
Recently, a
delegation of the Pakistan-based Sikhs met the newly elected Prime
Miinister Yousaf Raza Gillani, who assured the delegation that his
government would resolve all problems of the Sikhs. The PSGPC
president said that the government could register Sikh marriages at
Nankana Sahib, Karachi, Peshawar, Islamabad and Lahore. It is also
reliably learnt that the government was planning to hold a
“world-class mass marriage in which about 40 couples would tie the
knot”.
