Sikh jatha invited
to Pak despite emergency
WSN Network
Amritsar: Despite
an emergency having been imposed in Pakistan, Bishan Singh, the
president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC),
has invited his Indian counterpart Avtar Singh Makkar, president of
the SGPC, and other Sikh devotees to visit Sikh shrines to celebrate
Guru Nanak Dev's Gurpurab.
Talking to the media, the SGPC chief said though he might not go to
Pakistan due to the annual election of the committee scheduled to be
held here on November 23, a jatha of more than 1,800 pilgrims might
cross over to Pakistan, provided the government gave foolproof
security to the visiting devotees.
In another significant development, the SGPC chief said the
government of Afghanistan had given permission to the SGPC to send a
delegation to conduct a survey of the Sikh shrines in that country.
He said the Shiromani committee was committed to carrying out kar
sewa of the Sikh shrines in Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Replying to a question, Avtar Singh said more than 60 SGPC employees
were dismissed from service on charges of corruption, consumption of
liquor and “moral turpitude” during two years of his presidentship.
He claimed that the financial position of certain historical
gurdwaras which were in the red, had improved due to certain drastic
administrative decisions.
