Sikh temple spreads its message on recycling
WSN Network
Bexley: Bexley's Sikh community took
centre stage at a House of Commons event to spread their recycling
scheme to other Sikh communities. The Guru Nanak Durbar Gurdwara,
Lower Road, Belvedere, has been hailed as the greenest in the UK due
to its award-winning scheme.
More than 3,000 Sikhs in Bexley use the temple, not just for prayers
but also for its free kitchens, which open seven days a week. All the
kitchen waste was going into the general rubbish bins but now 80 per
cent is recycled.
Its work was the centrepiece of the event organised jointly by
Bexley Council, the UK Sikh All Party Parliamentary Group and London
21 Sustainability Network.
Bimla Lyall, vice president of Bexley's waste minimisation and
recycling focus group, first took on the challenge of introducing
recycling to the Gurdwara several years ago.
