Announces Formal Launch of Global Feed the Homeless Campaign in
Australia.
WSN Network
Melbourne:
Sikhcess™, a community-service organization dedicated to promoting
the basic Sikh principles of public service, community, and equality
for humankind, today announced that organizers and volunteers have
formally launched efforts to deliver food to the homeless and needy
in Australia through the Sikhcess ‘Feed the Homeless’ campaign.
Supported by Sikh
communities throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom,
Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia, Sikhcess volunteers are expected
to launch the world’s largest effort-of-its-kind to feed the
homeless and needy on March 1, 2008.
“Earlier this month,
we announced plans to expand our program to feed the homeless and
needy to several continents and countries, including the Australia,
where an estimated 100,000 people are homeless. It’s exciting to see
that this early goal for Australia is now being met with the formal
kick-start of our ‘Feed the Homeless’ campaign in the Australia.
Volunteers are clearly eager to help the poor and needy, a founding
principle of the Sikh faith,” announced Mr. Amit Singh, Executive
Director of Sikhcess.
“I’m honored to help
launch this campaign in Australia, and am particularly grateful for
the support of our volunteers who are especially keen to help with
donations of food, time and effort,” stated founding Sikhcess
National Coordinator for Australia, Ms. Amarpreet Kaur.
“I encourage
everyone -- regardless of their gender, age, or religious and
political affiliation -- to assist us with this campaign to help the
needy through the simple act of participating in this free community
kitchen, also known as Langar.”
The Sikh institution
of ‘Langar’ was started by the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak. It is
the only free kitchen of its kind in the world, collectively serving
millions around the globe each year, regardless of gender, social
standing, caste, color, religious affiliation, or beliefs. Through
this ideal of equality, the tradition of ‘Langar’ expresses the
ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness, and oneness of all
humankind. Working to address homeless hunger, Sikhcess has taken
‘Langar’ (or ‘Free Community Kitchen’) to those on the streets.
On 17 November 2007,
Sikhcess launched its first large-scale ‘Feed the Homeless’ campaign
with great success. Volunteers throughout North America successfully
distributed nearly 50,000 individual food packages to the homeless
and needy in just one night - the largest campaign of its kind.
