Badal
pledges security for Guruta Gaddi Divas

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has pledged
that his government would provide police security, equipment and
vehicles for the commemoration of the 300th Guruta Gaddi Divas of
Guru Granth Sahib being celebrated at Nanded in Maharashtra.
Badal gave the
assurance during a meeting of the National Committee on Guruta Gaddi
Divas celebrations of which Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil is the
chairman. During the meeting, Patil took stock of the arrangements
for the event, which 12 lakh devotees are expected to attend during
the weeklong celebrations at Hazoor Sahib from October 28 to
November 4, 2008. The committee finalised the programme schedule for
the celebrations, including Maha Ishnan on October 28, Diwali on
October 29, Nagar Kirtan on October 30, Parlok Gaman of Guru Gobind
Singh on November 3 and Nagar Kirtan on November 4.
Badal suggested the
members of the committee would tie up with various religious
organisations in Punjab in advance to make arrangements for langar
(community kitchen) to devotees.
Badal also urged
Patil to immediately release funds to the tune of Rs 200 crore for
developing and upgrading the historic towns of Anandpur Sahib and
Talwandi Sabo. He also sought timely allocation of funds for the
early completion of the Guru Gobind Singh Marg from Anandpur Sahib
to Nanded. Patil said a national seminar on the significance of
Guruta Gaddi Divas would be held in New Delhi soon. Academicians,
historians and Sikh scholars would be invited to attend it. He said
Rs 1,420 crore would be spent by the Centre and the governments of
Maharashtra and Punjab for the tercentenary celebrations of the
Guruta Gaddi Divas.
Badal handed over
the keys of houses to members of families displaced due to the
beautification plan around Gurdwara Hazoor Sahib. About 3,000
families had been displaced due to the implementation of the
galliara project. Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, Maharashtra CM
Vilasrao Deshmukh and Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala also
attended the meeting.
