15th Annual Sikh Children’s Day
WSN Network

Lankershim Gurdwara: Once again, the Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation celebrated its annual Sikh Children’s Day competition at Lankershim Gurdwara with great success. This year, as always, the program took place on the last Saturday of July. Almost 300 children registered for this annual event. Ever year, Sikh Children’s Day is celebrated in the memory of S. Ujjaldidar Singh, a bright, young, Amritdhari Gursikh who was tragically killed in an unfortunate accident in July of 1993.

It was a wonderful bright and sunny day as youngsters from all over California, and some beyond, started arriving at the Gurdwara to take part in the daylong competitions. The growth of the number of competitors was obvious as the parking lot was crowded with cars and vans bringing children to the Gurdwara for this very special event.

Children as young as two years of age to twenty years of age sang melodious Shabad Kirtan. Clearly, all the competitors had worked for countless hours to prepare. The Group Kirtan Competition, held at the end of the day was truly inspiring. The participants displayed their knowledge of Kirtan, Raag, Sur and Taal. The Kavita and Speech competitions left the judges and Sangat speechless. The Gatka and Basketball competitions were a huge success.

At the end of the long day, youngsters from cities all over California—Riverside, Selma, Huntington Beach, Rialto, Alhambra, Kingsburg, Buena Park—just to name a few, took home trophies and made their cities and community proud. All the participants received T-shirts with the theme of Deg Teg Fateh, and participation certificates to take home.

This year, the guest speaker at Sikh Children’s Day was Darshpreet Singh, a recent graduate and NCAA basketball player from Trinity University in Texas. Darshpreet Singh shared his experiences and successes as a Sikh playing NCAA basketball with the Sangat. Following his speech, seven deserving individuals who will be starting college/university in the fall, received scholarships in the amount of $500.00 each.
